I needed help writing a blog today, and luckily Zac Hoogendyk (actor in THE GAME’S AFOOT and ALL MY SONS) volunteered his assistance!
Eryn: Today I was asked what my favorite show of the season was. How can I answer that? Really, like a parent might say, I love them all equally and for individual reasons. Unlike what a parent might say, I have greatly enjoyed the shows that make me laugh or make me think. I love the beautiful imagery we see on our stages and the storytelling – we have top-notch storytelling here. And how can you pick a favorite of that?!
Zac: Today I asked Eryn what her favorite show of the season was. She could have picked any one of the wonderful shows that have been produced over the last few months. Instead, she dodged the question like the shady dodger she is. Personally, I’ve only been exposed to three of the productions. I saw The God Game. I was in The Game’s Afoot and the upcoming All My Sons. Having only seen these three shows, I don’t feel very well equipped to answer the question. However, I am perfectly capable of saying, without a doubt, that my favorite show of the season was Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol. Because…you know…Cody Nickell. You see how easy that was Eryn? Now pick a show.
Eryn: Consider yourself, at ‘ome. Consider yourself, part of the furniture. I am an artful, shady dodger. But I say again- How can I choose between the sharp-tongued pace of the storytelling in VENUS compared to the redemptive tale woven so beautifully by the MARLEY creative team? How can you trade SOMETHING INTANGIBLE’s journey of brothers or the inner conflict of THE GOD GAME? And I wouldn’t miss a minute of the laughter in THE GAME’S AFOOT. Cody Nickell is a great reason to like a show, you’re right. But we’ve got Arthur Miller next! What do you think about that?
Zac: I think you’re all alone on the other side of this dodgeball court. Me and my buddies are holding all the balls. Your soft shoe routine thus far has been admirable. Truly. I’m very impressed. But you’re not fooling me! It’s so OBVIOUS what your favorite show of the season is: ALL MY SONS! You’re holding out on naming a show that’s already been produced because you know, in your heart you’ve always known, that All My Sons is going to tear your heart out and leave it to rot on the floor of the theatre. Tell me i’m wrong!
Eryn: Ok…Ok…you’re right. I CANNOT WAIT for ALL MY SONS. Arthur Miller and this story? I get to watch the company run tomorrow and I am thrilled to hear this play aloud again. Can you blame me? It’s a story for all of us, and it’s told by a completely incredible and inspiring group of actors and creative team members. So excited. These stories are the reason we’re all here. They are the reason you’re visiting this blog, reader, and they touch us all in inexplicable and unique ways. This season wins in my book, as does this gem of a final show.
